Philosophy of education is the department of applied or practical philosophy concerned with the nature and goals of education and the philosophical problems arising from instructional theory and practice. Because it appears each inward to the parent self-discipline and outward to educational apply and the social, legal, and institutional contexts by which it takes place, philosophy of education concerns itself with each side of the normal theory/practice divide. Formal education refers to the structured education system that runs from main school to college, and includes specialised programmes for vocational, technical and skilled training.
